CT NEWINGTON — Newington Town Council held a public hearing on the Town Manager's proposed $161.3 million budget for fiscal 2026-2027. Town Manager Jonathan Altshul presented the proposal, a $10.3 million, or 6.79 percent, increase over the current year with a proposed mill rate of 31.48, representing an 8.5 mill decrease from the prior year. However, a sharp increase in assessed values from the town's revaluation resulted in an average residential tax increase of $1,457, or 22.4 percent.

The Board of Education budget accounts for $97.7 million, up 6.65 percent. More than a dozen residents spoke in opposition, citing personal tax increases ranging from $1,200 to $2,000 and questioning why the town's $30 million general fund balance was not being drawn down more substantially.
