CT NEWINGTON — Newington Council approved nearly $3 million in budget cuts to address a revaluation-driven tax crisis. Mayor Jon Trister led the effort, with Majority Leader Matthew Plourd sponsoring core reductions of $936,792 from Board of Education operating funds, $1 million from the Animal Control Center building project, and $800,000 from bus replacement funding. The council also cut the Ruth Chaffee parking lot project by $175,000, the John Patterson roof by $53,570, and contractual health services by $13,581.
The moves reduced the mill rate to 30.75, a 23.1 percent reduction from the originally proposed budget, in response to public outcry over property tax increases of up to 40 percent.
