CT NEWINGTON — The Newington Town Council held a public hearing on two ordinances authorizing local enforcement of school bus violations beginning July 1, 2026, in compliance with state Public Act 24-107. Mayor Jon Trister called the 6-minute hearing to order with 8 members present and 1 absent (Councilor Timothy Newton). Bill McCarthy of Churchill Drive supported the ordinances but questioned whether Newington has sufficient violations to justify the new enforcement burden on police.
Under the new system, drivers who pass a school bus with its stop arm engaged will face $250 municipal fines rather than state-level enforcement. Councilor Matthew Plourd moved to close the hearing at 6:36 p.m., approved unanimously.
