CT NEWINGTON — The Newington Economic Development Commission unanimously awarded $1,000 to the newly formed Newington Business Center Collective to fund initial downtown revitalization efforts, contingent on nonprofit paperwork completion and receipt submission. The committee, which held its next meeting on March 24 at T.J.'s restaurant, plans an Earth Day celebration on April 22 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and is developing merchant window art displays to boost foot traffic downtown. The Commission also discussed establishing a donation account for private fundraising contributions, which would operate outside the general fund while remaining subject to town purchasing and bidding procedures.
Town Planner Paul Dickson reported that recent state housing legislation requires updates to local zoning regulations, particularly for two to nine unit residential development on commercially zoned land; Newington now exceeds the state's ten percent affordable housing requirement at 10.31 percent.
