CT NEWINGTON — Newington Fire Commissioners unanimously approved $315,000 in funding for department infrastructure improvements. The Town Council allocated $275,000 for exhaust systems at all firehouse locations and $40,000 for training tower burn room repairs, which Chief Trommer said will require metal repairs inside. The board also unanimously authorized two per diem Fire Inspector positions to address staffing shortages after the departure of Inspector Austin Muir.
Fire Marshal DJ Zordan said the new positions require no additional departmental costs and will manage hours within the existing budget. Chairman Brian "Bubba" Whalen noted a 11 percent increase in fire calls from January through March and praised the department's efficiency.
